Installation Notes

  1. Ensure the engine is off and the drive is trimmed to a safe, accessible position.
  2. Remove the sterndrive assembly from the transom housing to access the gimbal area.
  3. Carefully pry out the old gimbal bearing seal using a seal puller, noting its orientation.
  4. Thoroughly clean the seal seating surface in the housing, ensuring it is free of old sealant, dirt, or corrosion.
  5. Apply a thin layer of marine grease to the outer edge of the new seal.
  6. Using an appropriate seal driver tool, press the new seal evenly into the housing until it is fully seated.
  7. It is highly recommended to replace the gimbal bearing at the same time as the seal.
  8. Reinstall the sterndrive assembly according to the manufacturer's service manual, torquing all fasteners to specification.

Troubleshooting & FAQ

How do I know if my gimbal bearing seal is failing?

Common signs include water entering the u-joint bellows, a rumbling or grinding noise from the transom area (especially when turning), or visible rust and corrosion on the gimbal bearing itself during inspection.

Can I replace just the seal without replacing the bearing?

While technically possible, it is strongly recommended to replace the gimbal bearing and seal together. If the seal has failed, it has likely allowed water to contaminate and damage the bearing, and replacing only the seal will lead to premature failure.

What are the signs of a bad gimbal bearing?

A bad gimbal bearing typically causes a growling or roaring noise from the rear of the boat that changes with steering angle. You may also notice excessive vibration or stiffness when turning the drive side-to-side.

How often should this seal be replaced?

The gimbal bearing seal should be inspected annually during routine outdrive maintenance. It is best practice to replace it preventatively every 2-3 seasons, or any time the sterndrive is removed for service.

What is the difference between an OEM part and an aftermarket one?

This listing is an aftermarket replacement (not OEM). It is built to OEM-level specifications with comparable materials and performance. Our parts are manufactured in an ISO 9002 facility and are batch-inspected for quality and consistency.

What is your shipping speed and cost?

We ship worldwide quickly—typical transit time is 5–15 days. Standard shipping is free to most regions, with expedited options available at checkout where applicable.

What is your warranty and return policy?

This part is covered by a 1-year warranty against manufacturing defects under normal use. If you encounter an issue, please contact our support team with your order details. Returns are accepted within our standard window for unused items in their original condition. See our policy page or reach out for instructions.
