Installation Notes

  1. Tilt the outdrive to the full "up" position and engage the trailer lock for safety.
  2. Place absorbent rags or an oil pan beneath the hose connections to catch any hydraulic fluid.
  3. Using appropriate line wrenches to prevent stripping, carefully loosen and disconnect the fittings at both the manifold and trim cylinder.
  4. Remove the old hose. Before installing the new one, compare them side-by-side to confirm an identical match in length and fittings.
  5. Install the new hose, threading the fittings by hand first to prevent cross-threading, then tighten them securely. Do not overtighten.
  6. Lower the outdrive, then cycle the power trim up and down 5-6 times to bleed any trapped air from the system.
  7. With the drive fully down, check the hydraulic fluid level in the reservoir and top it off with the manufacturer-recommended trim/tilt fluid.
  8. Thoroughly inspect both connections for any signs of leakage.

Troubleshooting & FAQ

Is this the correct hose for my engine?

This is the starboard side "up" hose. It is designed for specific Johnson/Evinrude outboards (65-175 HP, approx. 1990s-2000s) and sterndrives like the OMC Cobra (1994–1998) and Volvo Penta SX (1994–2005). Always verify your engine model, year, and original part number against the information on this page before ordering.

What is the difference between an "up" and "down" hose?

Power trim systems use hydraulic pressure to move the drive, requiring separate hoses for tilting up and tilting down. This hose is specifically for the "up" circuit on the starboard side and is not interchangeable with the "down" hose.

My original part number isn't 3853855. Will this fit?

It may. This hose is a direct cross-reference for several part numbers. Please check our Part Number Matrix section to confirm if your original part number is listed as an equivalent to Johnson/Evinrude 3853855, Volvo Penta 0985615, or another compatible number.

What are common symptoms of a bad trim hose?

Signs of a failing power trim hose include visible hydraulic fluid leaks near the engine or fittings, a slow or "spongy" trim response, or the outdrive slowly drifting down from a tilted position.

Do I need special tools for installation?

Professional installation is recommended. However, if you are performing the replacement, you will need a set of flare-nut or line wrenches to avoid damaging the soft metal of the hose fittings. You will also need the correct hydraulic trim fluid for your system.

How often should I replace trim hoses?

There is no fixed replacement interval. Hoses should be inspected at least annually for cracking, blistering, or brittleness. It is best practice to replace them proactively at the first sign of wear to prevent a failure on the water.

Is this an aftermarket or OEM part?

This listing is an aftermarket replacement (not OEM). It is built to OEM-level specifications with comparable materials. Our parts are manufactured in an ISO 9002 facility and are batch-inspected for quality and consistency.

How fast is shipping?

We ship worldwide quickly—typical transit time is 5–15 days. Standard shipping is free, and expedited options will appear at checkout if they are available for your location.

What is the warranty and return policy?

This part is covered by a 1-year warranty against manufacturing defects under normal marine use. If an issue arises, please contact our support team with your order details. Returns are accepted within our standard window for items that are unused and in original condition. See our full policy page or reach out for instructions.
