Installation Notes
- Disconnect the vessel's battery and close the raw water intake seacock.
- Locate the raw water pump on the engine and place a collection pan underneath to catch any spilled coolant or water.
- Loosen the hose clamps and carefully detach the inlet and outlet water hoses from the pump assembly.
- Unscrew the pump cover bolts and remove the cover plate. Note the orientation of the old impeller vanes.
- Carefully pry out the old impeller using two flathead screwdrivers or dedicated impeller pullers. Remove any old O-rings or gaskets.
- Thoroughly clean the pump housing interior, wear plate, and cover surfaces, removing any old sealant or debris.
- Install the new O-rings or gaskets as required by your specific pump model.
- Lightly lubricate the new impeller with glycerin or water-based lubricant and slide it into the housing, rotating it in the direction of engine operation to bend the vanes correctly.
- Reinstall the wear plate (if applicable) and the pump cover, tightening the screws in a star pattern to ensure an even seal.
- Reconnect the water hoses and tighten the clamps securely.
- Open the water seacock, reconnect the battery, and start the engine. Check immediately for any leaks around the pump cover or hoses.
Troubleshooting & FAQ
Will this kit fit an OMC Cobra sterndrive?
No. This kit is specifically designed for OMC Stringer Sterndrive models from 1962–1985 and is not compatible with any OMC Cobra drives.
What are the signs of a failing water pump impeller?
Common symptoms include the engine overheating at idle or low speeds, a noticeable decrease in water flow from the exhaust, or visible cracks, brittleness, and missing vanes on the impeller during inspection.
How often should a raw water pump impeller be replaced?
As a best practice, inspect the impeller annually and plan to replace it every 1 to 2 years or every 100–200 hours of operation, whichever comes first. Usage in saltwater or silty/sandy conditions may require more frequent replacement.
Does this kit include the pump housing?
No, this is a service kit containing only the internal wear parts (impeller, wear plate, seals). If your pump housing is cracked, scored, or corroded, you will need a complete pump assembly. For the full kit with housing, see part number Sierra 18-3386 or its equivalent.
What is the difference between an OEM and an aftermarket part?
This listing is an aftermarket replacement, not an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) part. It is built to meet or exceed OEM-level specifications using comparable materials. Our parts are manufactured in an ISO 9002 certified facility and are batch-inspected to ensure quality and consistency.
What are your shipping speed and cost?
We ship worldwide quickly—typical transit times are 5–15 days for most regions. Standard shipping is free, with expedited options available at checkout where applicable.
What is the warranty and return policy?
This product is covered by a 1-year warranty against manufacturing defects under normal marine use. If you encounter an issue, please contact our support team with your order details. Returns are accepted within our standard window for items that are unused and in their original condition. See our official policy page or reach out for instructions.
