Installation Notes
- Disconnect the battery and spark plug wires for safety.
- Place a drain pan under the lower unit and remove the gearcase oil drain/fill screws to drain the oil.
- Remove the bolts securing the lower unit (gearcase) to the engine's upper housing. Carefully lower and remove the unit.
- Unbolt and remove the old water pump housing. Note the orientation of the old components.
- Clean the mating surfaces and inspect the driveshaft for wear or damage.
- Assemble the new kit components in reverse order, starting with the plate, gasket, and new impeller. Use the included lube on the impeller.
- Install the new housing, cup, and seals, ensuring all parts are correctly seated. Tighten bolts to manufacturer-specified torque.
- Re-install the lower unit, ensuring the driveshaft, shift shaft, and water tube align correctly.
- Refill the gearcase with fresh lubricant before starting the engine.
- Once assembled, start the engine using a water supply (flushing muffs) and verify water is exiting the tell-tale port.
Troubleshooting & FAQ
How do I know if my water pump is failing?
Common signs of a failing water pump include a weak or non-existent water stream from the "tell-tale" outlet, engine overheating alarms, or a noticeable decrease in engine performance. A visual inspection may also reveal a brittle, cracked, or deformed impeller.
How often should I replace my outboard's impeller?
For preventative maintenance, it is recommended to inspect your water pump impeller annually and replace it every 1-2 years or every 100-200 hours of use, depending on operating conditions. Operation in saltwater or sandy/murky water may require more frequent replacement.
Will this kit fit an engine model not on the list?
Do not use this kit if your specific engine model and year are not explicitly listed in the compatibility table. While part numbers can be similar, internal differences can prevent a proper fit and lead to engine damage. Always verify compatibility before purchasing.
Is Moly Lube included for the impeller?
Yes, this complete kit includes a packet of Moly Lube. It should be applied to the inside of the housing cup and on the impeller blades to ensure a smooth initial startup and prevent damage to the new impeller.
What is the difference between the two driveshaft keys?
The kit includes two different keys to fit slight variations in driveshaft designs across the compatible model years. Use the key that matches the one you are replacing from your old assembly.
OEM vs. Aftermarket?
This listing is an aftermarket replacement (not OEM). Built to OEM-level specifications with comparable materials. Manufactured in an ISO 9002 facility, batch-inspected for consistency.
