Installation Notes

  1. Disconnect the battery and shift linkage. Place a drain pan under the lower unit.
  2. Remove the drain/fill plugs to drain the gearcase oil completely. Inspect the oil for metal shavings or a milky appearance, which indicates water intrusion.
  3. Unbolt and carefully lower the gearcase from the engine midsection.
  4. Disassemble the lower unit to access the seals, including the driveshaft and propshaft seals. Keep parts organized.
  5. Remove all old seals, O-rings, and gaskets. Thoroughly clean all mating surfaces and seal bores, ensuring they are free of old adhesive or corrosion.
  6. Carefully install the new seals and O-rings from the kit. Use a proper seal driver or socket to press them in squarely without damage. Lightly lubricate seals with marine grease.
  7. Reassemble the gearcase, torquing bolts to the manufacturer's specifications.
  8. Reinstall the lower unit, ensuring the driveshaft, water tube, and shift shaft align correctly.
  9. Refill the gearcase with fresh, high-quality marine gear lubricant according to your engine's manual.
  10. After running the engine, re-check for any oil or water leaks around the sealed areas.

Troubleshooting & FAQ

How do I confirm this kit fits my specific engine?

Verify your engine's brand (Johnson/Evinrude), model (V4), horsepower rating, and year of manufacture against the Engine & Model Compatibility table. This kit is specifically for 85–140 HP V4 models made between 1973 and 1983.

What are the signs that my lower unit seals are failing?

Common signs include milky or creamy gear oil (indicating water intrusion), visible oil leaks around the propeller shaft or driveshaft, or metal shavings on the magnetic drain plug. These symptoms suggest a breach in the seals that requires immediate attention.

Is this kit for 2-stroke or 4-stroke engines?

This kit is designed for the V4 engine models produced in the specified year range, which are 2-stroke outboards. Always confirm your engine's specifications before ordering.

How often should lower unit seals be replaced?

It is good practice to inspect your gear lube annually and replace the seals whenever you notice signs of leakage or water contamination. Many technicians recommend replacing lower unit seals every 3-5 years as preventative maintenance, or whenever the water pump is serviced.

Are any special tools required for installation?

Installation requires standard mechanical tools, a torque wrench, and potentially a seal puller and seal driver set for proper removal and installation of the oil seals without damaging the gearcase housing.

OEM vs. Aftermarket?

This listing is an aftermarket replacement (not OEM). Built to OEM-level specifications with comparable materials. Manufactured in an ISO 9002 facility, batch-inspected for consistency.
