Troubleshooting & FAQ
How do I know if my impeller needs replacing?
Common signs of a failing impeller include a weak or non-existent water stream from the "telltale" port, engine overheating alarms, and visible damage like cracked, brittle, or missing vanes on the old impeller upon inspection.
What is the recommended replacement interval?
For optimal reliability, most engine manufacturers recommend inspecting the impeller annually and replacing it every 1-2 years or every 100-200 hours of operation, whichever comes first. This interval can be shorter in saltwater or high-sediment environments.
Will this fit my specific year and model?
This impeller is designed for a broad range of models, as listed in the compatibility table. The most reliable way to confirm fitment is to match your original part number to one of the numbers in our Part Number Matrix. If you are uncertain, please contact us with your engine's model and serial number before purchasing.
What happens if I install the impeller with the vanes bent the wrong way?
Installing the impeller with vanes bent in the opposite direction of the driveshaft's rotation can cause premature failure and severely reduced water flow, leading to engine overheating. Always pre-load the vanes in the correct rotational direction as you slide the housing over them.
Is a key always necessary for installation?
Yes. The key locks the impeller to the driveshaft, ensuring it spins correctly. Never reuse a worn or damaged key. This impeller includes a new key for proper installation.
Can I run the engine dry after installing a new impeller?
No. Never run the engine without a water supply, even for a few seconds. Dry running will instantly damage the new impeller as it relies on water for lubrication and cooling.
OEM vs. Aftermarket?
This listing is an aftermarket replacement (not OEM). Built to OEM-level specifications with comparable materials. Manufactured in an ISO 9002 facility, batch-inspected for consistency.
