- Lubricate the new O-rings and interior of the housing with a suitable marine lubricant.
- Install the new impeller, bending the blades in the correct rotational direction.
- Reinstall the face plate with its new gasket/O-ring, and tighten screws to the manufacturer’s torque specification.
- Re-mount the pump, reconnect the hoses, and open the seacock valve.
- Start the engine and immediately check for water flow from the exhaust and inspect the pump for any leaks.
Troubleshooting & FAQ
How do I know if this impeller kit fits my engine?
This kit is for MerCruiser V8 engines (1997 and later) that have a one-piece sea water pump body. The key is the pump housing type. Please verify your engine has this specific pump before ordering and cross-reference your existing part number with our list.
What are the signs of a failing water pump impeller?
Common signs include a higher-than-normal engine temperature at idle or low speeds, a weak or non-existent stream of water from the exhaust outlet, and visible cracks, tears, or stiff/brittle blades on the impeller itself during inspection.
How often should the impeller be replaced?
As a preventative maintenance item, it's recommended to inspect the impeller annually and replace it every 1-2 years or every 100-200 hours of operation, depending on usage conditions (e.g., saltwater vs. freshwater, high-sand environments).
What can cause premature impeller failure?
The most common causes are running the pump dry (even for a few seconds), sucking up sand or debris which accelerates wear, and long periods of disuse where the blades can become stiff and take a permanent set.
OEM vs. Aftermarket?
This listing is an aftermarket replacement (not OEM). Built to OEM-level specifications with comparable materials. Manufactured in an ISO 9002 facility, batch-inspected for consistency.
