Installation Notes

  1. Position a suitable drain pan under the lower unit's gearcase drain plug.
  2. Using the correct wrench, carefully loosen and remove the lower drain plug screw.
  3. Allow the old gear oil to drain completely. Inspect the oil for any metal shavings or water contamination.
  4. Clean the drain plug and the sealing surface on the gearcase, removing any old gasket material.
  5. Remove the old gasket from the drain plug and install the new gasket.
  6. Reinstall the drain plug with the new gasket. Tighten it securely according to the manufacturer's torque specifications. Do not overtighten.
  7. Refill the gearcase with the recommended marine gear lubricant through the upper fill hole until it flows out of the lower plug opening.
  8. Reinstall the upper plug, then quickly reinstall the lower plug. Check for leaks around the plug after a few minutes.

Troubleshooting & FAQ

How often should I replace this gear oil gasket?

It is best practice to replace the gear oil drain plug gasket every time you change your gear oil. This ensures a fresh, reliable seal and prevents leaks that can lead to costly gearcase damage.

What are the signs of a failed or leaking gasket?

The most common sign is a visible oil drip or residue around the lower unit drain plug. If you notice a drop in your gear lube level or see a sheen of oil on the water around your motor, a worn gasket may be the cause.

Will this gasket definitely fit my motor if it's in the list?

This part is designed to fit the models listed in the compatibility table. However, always verify against your old part before installing. If your model is on the edge of a year range, visual confirmation is critical.

Is this gasket made of copper, aluminum, or another material?

Drain plug gaskets are typically made from a soft metal like copper or aluminum, or sometimes a composite fiber material. This allows them to "crush" slightly to form a perfect seal. This aftermarket part uses a material designed to meet or exceed OEM performance for this purpose.

OEM vs. Aftermarket?

This listing is an aftermarket replacement (not OEM). Built to OEM-level specifications with comparable materials. Manufactured in an ISO 9002 facility, batch-inspected for consistency.
