Installation Notes
- Shut off the engine and close the raw water intake seacock.
- Place a small pan under the pump to catch any drained water.
- Remove the screws holding the water pump's cover plate.
- Gently pry off the cover. Note the rotational direction of the existing impeller's blades.
- Use needle-nose pliers or an impeller puller tool to grip the hub and pull the old impeller straight out.
- Clean the inside of the pump housing and the cover plate, ensuring no old impeller pieces remain.
- Apply a glycerin-based lubricant to the new impeller's blades and the inside of the pump housing.
- Install the new impeller with a slight twisting motion, ensuring the blades bend in the same direction as the old one.
- Place the new gasket on the pump body, align the cover plate, and tighten the screws in a star pattern.
- Open the seacock, start the engine, and immediately check for proper water flow from the exhaust and for any leaks at the pump cover.
Troubleshooting & FAQ
How do I know if this impeller fits my engine?
First, check the Part Number Matrix to see if your old impeller's part number is listed. Second, consult the Engine & Model Compatibility table to confirm your specific engine model is included. Matching both is the best way to ensure correct fitment.
What are the signs of a failing impeller?
Common signs include a rise in engine operating temperature, reduced water flow from the exhaust port, visible cracks or missing blades on the impeller upon inspection, and an unusually stiff or brittle feel to the rubber.
How often should I replace my impeller?
For preventative maintenance, it's recommended to inspect your impeller annually and replace it every 1-2 years or every 200-300 hours of engine use, whichever comes first. Harsh operating conditions (sandy or silty water) may require more frequent changes.
What happens if I install the impeller with the blades facing the wrong way?
Installing an impeller with the blades bent in the opposite direction of the pump's rotation can cause immediate damage to the blades upon startup, leading to poor water flow and potential engine overheating. Always note the direction of the old impeller before removal.
OEM vs. Aftermarket?
This listing is an aftermarket replacement (not OEM). Built to OEM-level specifications with comparable materials. Manufactured in an ISO 9002 facility, batch-inspected for consistency.
