Installation Notes
- Disconnect the vessel's battery and fully drain the engine cooling system into a suitable container.
- Loosen the alternator or tensioner pulley to release tension on the serpentine belt, then remove the belt from the water pump pulley.
- Unscrew the bolts holding the pump pulley and remove it. Proceed to unbolt the old water pump from the engine block and carefully detach it.
- Thoroughly clean the engine's mounting surface to remove all traces of the old gasket and any sealant or corrosion.
- Position the new gasket on the engine block, then mount the new water pump. Hand-tighten the bolts, then torque them to the manufacturer's specifications in a star pattern.
- Re-install the pulley onto the new pump and refit the serpentine belt, ensuring it is correctly tensioned.
- Reconnect the battery. Refill the cooling system with the recommended coolant, then run the engine and carefully inspect for any leaks around the pump and hoses.
Troubleshooting & FAQ
How do I know if this pump fits my specific engine?
This pump fits Ford 302/351W V8 marine engines (5.0L/5.8L) from 1993–1996. The best way to confirm fitment is to match your existing part number to one of the equivalents listed in our Part Number Matrix.
What are the common signs of a failing water pump?
Signs of failure include coolant leaks from the pump's weep hole, a wobbling pulley, grinding or squealing noises from the pump bearing, and engine overheating. If you notice any of these symptoms, the pump should be inspected immediately.
Is this a raw water pump or an engine circulation pump?
This is an engine circulation pump. It circulates coolant within the engine's closed cooling system. It is not a raw water (sea water) pump, which draws water from outside the vessel.
What is the main difference between this aftermarket pump and an OEM one?
Functionally, there is no difference. This aftermarket pump is built to meet or exceed original equipment specifications using comparable materials like a brass impeller and stainless steel shaft, ensuring similar performance and longevity in a marine environment.
How often should a marine water pump be inspected or replaced?
While there is no fixed replacement interval, it is good practice to inspect the water pump annually or whenever the cooling system is serviced. Replace it at the first sign of a leak, bearing noise, or reduced cooling performance.
Is there any advantage to a brass impeller over a plastic one?
Yes. Brass impellers offer superior durability and resistance to corrosion, debris, and temperature extremes compared to plastic impellers, making them better suited for the harsh conditions of marine applications.
OEM vs. Aftermarket?
This listing is an aftermarket replacement (not OEM). Built to OEM-level specifications with comparable materials. Manufactured in an ISO 9002 facility, batch-inspected for consistency.
