Installation Notes

  1. Ensure the engine is off, cool, and disconnected from the power source. Drain the engine oil completely.
  2. Remove the oil pan to access the bottom end of the engine.
  3. Identify the connecting rod cap for the cylinder you are servicing.
  4. Carefully unbolt and remove the connecting rod cap, noting its orientation.
  5. Remove the old bearing shells from both the rod and the cap.
  6. Thoroughly clean the bearing saddles in the rod and cap, ensuring they are free of oil and debris.
  7. Apply a generous amount of assembly lube to the new oversized bearing shells.
  8. Install the new bearings into the rod and cap, ensuring the locating tangs are correctly seated.
  9. Use plastigauge to verify the oil clearance between the bearing and the crankshaft journal is within the engine manufacturer’s specifications.
  10. Reinstall the connecting rod cap in its original orientation and torque the bolts to the specified value in the correct sequence.
  11. After installation, manually rotate the crankshaft to ensure there is no binding.
  12. Reinstall the oil pan with a new gasket and refill the engine with the correct grade of oil.

How do I know if I need oversized bearings?

Oversized bearings like this 0.30mm set are required when the crankshaft journal has been machined down during an engine rebuild. This is determined by a machinist measuring the journal diameter. Using oversized bearings on a standard-size crankshaft will cause the engine to seize.

What are the symptoms of a failing connecting rod bearing?

The most common sign is a distinct, rhythmic knocking or tapping sound from the engine that increases with RPM, often called "rod knock." Other symptoms include low oil pressure readings and finding metallic particles (bearing material) in the engine oil during an oil change.

Is this kit for a single cylinder or the full engine?
