Installation Notes

  1. Drain engine oil and coolant. Disconnect the battery and relevant electrical connections.
  2. Access the engine's bottom end by removing the oil pan and any interfering components.
  3. Carefully unbolt the connecting rod cap for the cylinder you are servicing. Note the orientation of the cap and bearings.
  4. Remove the old bearing shells from the rod and cap. Clean all surfaces meticulously, ensuring no oil, debris, or old bearing material remains.
  5. Inspect the crankshaft journal for scoring or damage. Ensure it has been machined to the correct 0.25mm oversize specification.
  6. Install the new bearing shells into the connecting rod and cap, ensuring the locating tangs are properly seated.
  7. Apply a liberal amount of assembly lube to the bearing surfaces and the crankshaft journal.
  8. Reinstall the connecting rod cap to the correct orientation and torque the bolts to the manufacturer's specification in the proper sequence.
  9. Rotate the crankshaft by hand to ensure smooth movement without binding.
  10. Reinstall the oil pan with a new gasket and all other components. Refill engine oil and coolant.

How do I know if I need oversized bearings?

Oversized bearings are required only when the crankshaft has been machined (ground) to a smaller diameter during a rebuild. A machine shop will measure the crankshaft journals and inform you if they need grinding and which size bearings you will consequently need. These 0.25mm bearings are for crankshafts machined to the first oversize specification.

What are common signs of a failing connecting rod bearing?

Symptoms of a bad rod bearing include a persistent, rhythmic knocking sound from the engine that increases with RPM, low oil pressure readings, and potentially finding metallic particles (bearing material) in the engine oil during an oil change.

Is machining required to install these 0.25mm oversized bearings?

Yes. You cannot install oversized bearings on a standard-size crankshaft. The corresponding crankshaft connecting rod journal must be precisely machined down by a professional machine shop to accommodate the thicker, oversized bearing.

Is there a specific orientation for these bearings?

Yes, bearings have a locating tang (or notch) that must be seated correctly in the corresponding groove in the connecting rod and cap. They also have oiling holes that must align with the oil passages in the rod. Always follow the engine service manual for correct placement.
