Installation Notes
- Ensure the engine is off and disconnect the battery terminals. Trim the sterndrive to the full tilt or trailer position for access.
- Remove the sterndrive from the gimbal housing by following the procedures in your official service manual.
- Loosen the hose clamps securing the old bellows to the drive and the transom plate, then remove them.
- Carefully pull or cut the old, deteriorated bellows away.
- Thoroughly clean the mounting surfaces on both the drive and the transom plate to remove any old adhesive, sealant, or rubber fragments.
- Slide the new clamps over each end of the new bellows.
- Apply a suitable bellows adhesive (if recommended by your service manual) to the mounting surfaces.
- Fit the new bellows into position, ensuring it is properly seated and aligned on both ends without any twists.
- Position the clamps in their grooves and tighten them securely. Do not overtighten, which can damage the rubber.
- Reinstall the sterndrive, reconnect the battery, and test for any water leaks in a controlled environment before heading out on the water.
Troubleshooting & FAQ
How do I confirm this bellows fits my engine?
Check your engine model and year against the "Engine & Model Compatibility" table. You should also visually compare the product images to your existing part before ordering to ensure a match.
What are the signs of a failing drive bellow?
Visible cracks, splitting, or perishing of the rubber are clear signs of failure. Water inside the boat around the transom assembly is a critical indicator that the bellows has been breached and needs immediate replacement to prevent catastrophic damage to the u-joints and gimbal bearing.
How often should I replace my drive bellows?
Drive bellows are a critical maintenance item. It is generally recommended to inspect them annually and replace them every 3–5 years, or immediately if any signs of wear or damage are found. The interval can be shorter for boats used in saltwater.
Is any special sealant needed for installation?
While the clamps provide the primary seal, many mechanics use a bellows adhesive like Permatex Bellows Adhesive or 3M 847 to ensure a watertight seal. Always consult your sterndrive's service manual for the recommended procedure.
Why is UV and oil resistance important for a bellows?
The bellows is constantly exposed to harsh marine elements, including sunlight (UV radiation), engine oil, and fuel. A resistant compound prevents the rubber from degrading, cracking, and failing prematurely, ensuring a longer service life.
OEM vs. Aftermarket?
This listing is an aftermarket replacement (not OEM). Built to OEM-level specifications with comparable materials. Manufactured in an ISO 9002 facility, batch-inspected for consistency.
