Installation Notes

  1. Close the engine's raw water intake seacock.
  2. Locate the sea water pump, typically mounted on the engine's crankshaft pulley.
  3. Remove the screws securing the pump's end cover.
  4. Carefully pry out the old impeller using pliers or impeller pullers. Note the rotational direction of the blades.
  5. Clean any debris or old gasket material from the pump housing and end cover.
  6. Lightly lubricate the inside of the housing and the new impeller with water-resistant grease or soap.
  7. Install the new impeller, bending the blades in the correct rotational direction as you insert it.
  8. Place the new o-ring or gasket onto the pump housing.
  9. Reinstall the end cover and tighten the screws evenly.
  10. Open the seacock before starting the engine.
  11. Start the engine and immediately check for proper water flow and for any leaks around the pump cover.

Troubleshooting & FAQ

How do I know if this impeller fits my Volvo Penta engine?

This kit is for Volvo Penta gas engines (3.0L-8.1L) from approximately 1999 to 2005 with a crankshaft-mounted raw water pump. The most reliable method is to match your existing part number to those in our Part Number Matrix or to your pump model number in the compatibility table.

What are the signs of a failing impeller?

Common signs include engine overheating at idle or low speeds, reduced water flow from the exhaust, cracked or missing impeller blades upon inspection, and a leaking pump housing.

How often should I replace my engine's impeller?

As a preventative measure, most marine technicians recommend replacing the impeller every 1-2 years or every 100-200 hours of engine use, whichever comes first. This interval may be shorter if you operate in sandy or debris-heavy water.

Why are there different year ranges like "prior to 2005" vs. "through 2005"?

Volvo Penta made a design change around 2005. Some models in 2005 may use a different pump and impeller. This kit fits the earlier style common from 1999-2005. Always verify your pump number; if in doubt, check your original part before ordering.

What is the stop lug used for?

The included stop lug is a small but critical component that prevents the impeller from spinning on the pump shaft in certain pump designs. Not all pump versions require it, but it should be used if your original setup included one.

My engine still overheats after replacing the impeller. What else could be wrong?

If overheating persists, check for other blockages in the cooling system, such as clogged intake strainers, heat exchangers, or exhaust manifolds. Also, verify the thermostat is functioning correctly and a proper amount of coolant is in the closed-cooling side, if applicable.

OEM vs. Aftermarket?

This listing is an aftermarket replacement (not OEM). Built to OEM-level specifications with comparable materials. Manufactured in an ISO 9002 facility, batch-inspected for consistency.

Shipping speed & cost?

We ship worldwide quickly—typical transit 5–15 days. Standard shipping is free; expedited options appear at checkout where available.

Warranty & returns?

Covered by a 1-year warranty against manufacturing defects under normal use. If issues arise, contact support with your order details. Returns are accepted within our standard window (unused & in original condition). See our policy page or reach out for instructions.

Safety & Important Info

  • Verify images and specifications against your original part. If anything differs—even if your model appears compatible—do not purchase.
  • This is an aftermarket replacement part, not an OEM component. Brand names and part numbers are used for reference purposes only.
  • Professional installation is recommended for safety and performance. Improper installation can lead to engine damage.
