- Gently pry off the cover. Note the orientation of the impeller blades as you remove the old impeller.
- Use needle-nose pliers or an impeller puller tool for removal if it's stuck.
- Clean the interior of the pump housing and the surfaces of the end cover.
- Lubricate the new impeller and the housing interior with a water-resistant grease or liquid soap.
- Install the new impeller with a twisting motion, ensuring the blades are bent in the same direction as the old ones.
- Install the new O-ring into its groove on the pump body or cover.
- Re-secure the end cover plate and tighten the screws in a star pattern to ensure an even seal.
- Open the raw water seacock.
- Start the engine and immediately check the pump for any leaks and confirm water is flowing from the exhaust.
Troubleshooting & FAQ
How do I know if my impeller needs replacing?
Common signs of a worn or failed impeller include a sudden increase in engine operating temperature, a noticeable reduction in water flow from the exhaust outlet, and visible cracks, tears, or stiffness in the impeller blades upon inspection.
What is the recommended replacement interval?
For preventative maintenance, we recommend inspecting your impeller annually and replacing it every one to two years. However, if you operate in silty or sandy water, more frequent replacement may be necessary.
What happens if the impeller fails during operation?
An impeller failure will halt the flow of cooling water to your engine, which can lead to rapid overheating and significant engine damage. Broken impeller blades can also travel further into the cooling system, causing blockages that are difficult to locate and clear.
Is any special lubricant required for installation?
Using a water-based lubricant, like dish soap, or a silicone-based marine grease on the impeller and inside the pump housing will ease installation and prevent damage to the blades during the first dry startup.
