Installation Notes
Crucial Fitment Note: This kit is intended ONLY for the late design Volvo Penta pump 840557 which uses a ball bearing. It will not fit earlier models or any turbo engines, which use a larger splined shaft. Verify your existing pump model before ordering or beginning installation.
- Disconnect the vessel's battery and close the raw water intake seacock.
- Drain the coolant from the system to a level below the pump.
- Loosen the belt and remove the hoses connected to the seawater pump.
- Unbolt and remove the old pump from the engine bracket.
- Disassemble the pump on a clean workbench. A bearing press may be needed to remove the old shaft and bearings without damaging the housing.
- Thoroughly clean all pump housing surfaces, removing any old gasket material, scale, or corrosion.
- Using the new components from the kit, press in the new bearings and seals. Ensure seals are oriented correctly to prevent leaks.
- Install the new shaft, cam, impeller, and cover using all new O-rings and gaskets provided.
- Re-install the fully assembled pump onto the engine, tighten bolts to manufacturer-specified torque.
- Reconnect hoses, tension the belt correctly, and open the seacock.
- Reconnect the battery, start the engine, and immediately inspect the pump for any signs of water or coolant leaks.
Troubleshooting & FAQ
How do I know if this kit fits my pump?
This kit is specifically for the late design Volvo Penta pump (part number 840557) used on MD2001, MD2002, and MD2003 series engines. This pump uses a ball bearing. Critically, it does NOT fit turbo engines or earlier pump designs. Always verify your pump model before ordering.
What are the signs my pump shaft or bearings are failing?
Common symptoms include water dripping from the pump's weep hole, a visible wobble in the pump pulley while the engine is running, or a grinding/squealing noise originating from the pump assembly.
Can I just replace the impeller instead of the whole shaft kit?
If only the flexible impeller has failed, you can replace it alone. However, if the pump is leaking, noisy, or the shaft has play, it indicates wear in the bearings or seals. This comprehensive kit addresses those core failures, preventing a recurring issue.
What is the difference between part number 21951414 and 875756?
Part number 875756 is the original, older part number from Volvo Penta. It was later superseded by and is functionally identical to 21951414. This aftermarket kit is a direct replacement for both.
Are special tools required for this job?
Standard mechanic's hand tools are required. Additionally, a bearing press and seal puller/installer are highly recommended to ensure the new bearings and seals are installed correctly without causing damage to the components or pump housing.
OEM vs. Aftermarket?
This listing is an aftermarket replacement (not OEM). Built to OEM-level specifications with comparable materials. Manufactured in an ISO 9002 facility, batch-inspected for consistency.
