Installation Notes
The following are general, model-agnostic steps for annual sterndrive service. Always consult your official service manual for detailed procedures specific to your drive.
- Haul the boat from the water and ensure the sterndrive is secured in a tilted position for access.
- Disconnect the boat's battery to prevent accidental startups.
- Place a drain pan under the lower unit and remove the drain/fill plugs to empty the old gear lube.
- Remove the propeller(s), inspecting for damage.
- Remove and replace the U-joint bellows. This is often the most complex part of the service.
- Remove the old zinc anodes from the prop shaft and transom shield and install the new ones.
- Inspect and replace any seals or gaskets as needed.
- Refill the drive with the new gear lube from the bottom-up until it flows out of the top vent hole. Re-install plugs.
- Re-install the propeller(s).
- Lower the drive, reconnect the battery, and check for proper operation.
