Installation Notes

  1. Ensure the engine is off and cool, and disconnect the battery for safety.
  2. Access the old crankshaft seal, which may require removing components like the flywheel or crankcase cover per your service manual.
  3. Carefully extract the old seal using a dedicated seal puller. Avoid scratching the crankshaft or its housing.
  4. Clean the housing bore and crankshaft surface meticulously to remove any oil, residue, or old sealant.
  5. Lightly lubricate the inner lip of the new seal and the crankshaft with fresh engine oil.
  6. Position the new seal squarely, ensuring the spring-loaded lip faces the engine (inward).
  7. Gently press the seal into place using a seal driver or a socket of the matching diameter until it is seated flush. Do not hammer directly on the seal.
  8. Reassemble all previously removed components in reverse order.
  9. Once reassembled, start the engine and carefully inspect for any oil leaks around the new seal.

Troubleshooting & FAQ

How can I tell if my crankshaft oil seal is failing?

The most common sign is a visible engine oil leak from the area behind the crankshaft pulley or flywheel. You may also notice a consistent drop in oil level without other obvious leaks. Over time, leaking oil can contaminate belts and sensors, causing further issues.

Is this seal directional? Do I need to install it a certain way?

Yes, this is a directional, lipped seal. The inner lip, which typically has a small garter spring, must face inward toward the engine's crankcase to properly contain the oil. Installing it backward will result in an immediate leak.

What is an "SD-Type" oil seal?

An SD-Type seal is a specific design of oil seal characterized by a dual-lip construction and a metal case. The primary lip, reinforced by a garter spring, provides the main sealing function, while a secondary, non-spring-loaded lip acts as a dust and contaminant excluder.

What is the recommended replacement interval for this seal?

Crankshaft oil seals do not have a standard replacement interval. They are typically replaced only when they show signs of leaking or during a major engine overhaul when they are already accessible.

Can I reuse my old seal if it looks okay?

No. Oil seals are designed for single use only. The removal process almost always damages or distorts the seal, and it will not create a reliable seal if reinstalled.

Do I need to apply any sealant during installation?

This package contains only the oil seal. Some service manuals recommend applying a thin bead of sealant to the outer metal diameter of the seal before pressing it in. Always consult your specific engine's service manual for the correct procedure.

OEM vs. Aftermarket?

This listing is an aftermarket replacement (not OEM). It is built to OEM-level specifications with comparable materials and manufactured in an ISO 9002 facility, where it is batch-inspected for consistency.
