Installation Notes
- Disconnect the battery and ensure the outboard is in neutral.
- Remove the bolts securing the lower unit (gearcase) and carefully separate it from the upper housing.
- Locate and unbolt the water pump cover to expose the impeller.
- Note the rotational direction of the old impeller's blades before removing it. Remove the woodruff key from the shaft.
- Clean any debris or corrosion from the pump housing, wear plate, and shaft. Inspect for deep grooves or damage.
- Place the new woodruff key in its slot on the driveshaft.
- Slide the new impeller onto the shaft. Turn the driveshaft clockwise while pushing down to help fold the blades into the correct orientation.
- Apply a thin layer of marine grease or soap-and-water solution to the inside of the pump housing.
- Reinstall the housing and tighten the bolts to the manufacturer's recommended torque.
- Reattach the lower unit, ensuring the driveshaft and water tube align correctly.
- Once assembled, test the engine using a water supply ("muffs") to confirm water is pumping from the tell-tale outlet.
Troubleshooting & FAQ
How do I find my engine model to check for fitment?
Your Yamaha outboard's model and serial number are typically located on a tag on the transom clamp bracket. This impeller fits Yamaha 2 HP 2-stroke models listed in the compatibility table, replacing OEM part 646-44352-01-00.
What are the signs of a faulty impeller?
Key indicators include a weak or nonexistent water stream from the "telltale" outlet, engine overheating alarms, or visible cracks and stiffness in the impeller's rubber blades upon inspection.
How often should this impeller be replaced?
As a preventative measure, we recommend replacing the impeller every 1-2 years or after every 100-200 hours of operation. Frequency should increase if you primarily operate in saltwater or sandy/silty conditions.
Can I run the engine dry after installing the new impeller?
No. Never run the engine without a water supply, even for a few seconds. Dry running will destroy the new neoprene impeller almost instantly. Always use a flush bag ("muffs") or run the engine in the water after installation.
What causes premature impeller failure?
The most common causes are running the pump dry, sucking up abrasive sand or debris, and natural degradation of the rubber over time. Infrequent use can also cause the blades to stiffen and take a permanent set.
Is this part any different from the original Yamaha part?
This aftermarket part is designed as a direct replacement for the OEM impeller. It is made with comparable high-quality neoprene and brass materials to meet or exceed original performance and durability standards.
OEM vs. Aftermarket?
This listing is an aftermarket replacement (not OEM). Built to OEM-level specifications with comparable materials. Manufactured in an ISO 9002 facility, batch-inspected for consistency.
Shipping speed & cost?
We ship worldwide quickly—typical transit 5–15 days. Standard shipping is free; expedited options appear at checkout where available.
Warranty & returns?
Covered by a 1-year warranty against manufacturing defects under normal use. If issues arise, contact support with your order details. Returns are accepted within our standard window (unused & in original condition). See our policy page or reach out for instructions.
