Installation Notes

  1. Gather all necessary tools, including an oil filter wrench, socket set, gear lube pump, and container for used fluids.
  2. Position the outboard in its tilt position over a drain pan and remove the drain plug to empty the engine oil.
  3. Remove and replace the old oil filter, applying a light coat of new oil to the gasket of the new filter.
  4. Re-install the drain plug with a new gasket and fill the engine with the specified amount of new oil from the kit.
  5. Locate and replace the external fuel/water separating filter and any inline fuel filters included in your kit.
  6. Drain and replace the lower unit gear lubricant using new drain screw gaskets.
  7. Remove and inspect the spark plugs. Replace them with the new plugs from the kit, ensuring they are gapped correctly.
  8. Check the propeller for damage and ensure the hub is secure.
  9. Inspect sacrificial anodes for corrosion and replace if they are more than 50% depleted.
  10. For kits "with Cooling," replace the water pump impeller and gaskets.
  11. Start the engine and check for any leaks from the oil filter or drain plugs. Check for a steady stream of water from the tell-tale.

Troubleshooting & FAQ

How do I know which kit is right for my Yamaha outboard?

Check the compatibility table on this page. Match your engine's model, horsepower, and year range to the corresponding kit part number (OEM Part No.). Pay close attention to notes regarding oil weight (e.g., 10W-30 vs. 20W-40) and whether your kit should include cooling system parts.

What's the difference between a standard kit and a "with Cooling" kit?

Kits marked "with Cooling" include additional components for servicing the water pump, typically a new impeller and associated gaskets/wear plates. This is a critical part of a comprehensive annual service to prevent overheating.

How often should I perform this 100-hour service?

This service should be performed every 100 hours of engine operation or at least once a year, whichever comes first. Regular maintenance is crucial for your outboard's performance, longevity, and reliability.

Do I need special tools for this service?

Most of the service can be completed with standard mechanic's tools like a socket set, oil filter wrench, and screwdrivers. A gear lube pump and a spark plug socket are also highly recommended to complete the job correctly.

The kit oil is 10W-30, but I see other options. Does it matter?

Yes, it's very important. Always use the oil viscosity recommended for your specific engine model and operating conditions. Refer to your owner's manual or the compatibility table on our page to ensure you select the correct kit.

OEM vs. Aftermarket?

This listing is an aftermarket replacement (not OEM). Built to OEM-level specifications with comparable materials. Manufactured in an ISO 9002 facility, batch-inspected for consistency.
