  2. Remove the propeller, followed by the lower unit housing bolts, and detach the gearcase from the engine.
  3. Carefully remove the old seals, washers, and o-rings, paying close attention to their orientation and sequence.
  4. Thoroughly clean all component surfaces and seal cavities, removing any debris or old sealant.
  5. Apply a thin coat of marine grease to the new seals and o-rings before pressing them into place.
  6. Use a proper seal driver or a socket of matching diameter to ensure seals are installed evenly and without damage.
  7. Reinstall all components in the reverse order of disassembly.
  8. Reattach the lower unit to the engine, torquing bolts to manufacturer specifications.
  9. Refill the gearcase with the correct grade and quantity of new marine gear lubricant.
  10. After refilling, check for any leaks around the drain/fill screws and shafts before returning to service.

Troubleshooting & FAQ

How do I know if my gearcase seals are failing?

The most common signs of seal failure are milky, grey, or chunky gear lube, which indicates water contamination. You may also notice oil leaking from the propeller shaft area or dripping from the skeg after the engine has been tilted up.

Is this kit for both 2-stroke and 4-stroke engines?

Yes, this versatile kit fits a wide range of Johnson/Evinrude models, including 2-stroke engines from 1974–2007 and 4-stroke engines from 1995–2004. Always check your engine's horsepower and year against our compatibility table to ensure a correct fit.

Do I need special tools for this job?

While standard mechanic's tools are used for most of the disassembly, a seal puller tool is highly recommended for safely removing old seals, and a seal driver set (or a socket of the correct size) is essential for installing the new seals without damaging them.

How often should gearcase seals be replaced?

As a preventative measure, it is wise to replace gearcase seals every 3-5 years, or whenever the lower unit is serviced. They should be replaced immediately if you discover water in the gear oil during your annual lube change.
