- Carefully remove the bolts from the thermostat housing cover and detach any connected hoses.
- Note the orientation of the existing thermostat before removing it from the housing.
- Thoroughly clean the mating surfaces of both the housing and its cover, removing all old gasket material.
- Install the new thermostat in the same orientation as the original part.
- Position the new gaskets and sealing ring as required for your specific model.
- Re-secure the housing cover, tightening the bolts to the manufacturer's specified torque in a crisscross pattern.
- Reconnect hoses, refill the cooling system with the appropriate coolant, and inspect for any leaks.
- Start the engine and allow it to reach operating temperature, confirming the thermostat opens correctly and there are no leaks.
Troubleshooting & FAQ
How do I know if my thermostat has failed?
Common signs of a faulty thermostat include engine overheating, the engine running too cold and failing to reach its normal operating temperature, or erratic temperature gauge fluctuations.
Is this kit for raw water or closed cooling systems?
This thermostat kit is specifically designed for raw water (or "open") cooling systems common in the listed Volvo Penta engines. It is not intended for use in closed (freshwater) cooling systems.
Why are there multiple gaskets included?
This kit is designed to fit a wide variety of engine models produced over two decades. Different models and years used slightly different housing configurations, so multiple gaskets are included to ensure you have the correct one for your specific application.
What is the purpose of the 144/145°F temperature rating?
This temperature is the point at which the thermostat begins to open, allowing raw water to circulate through the engine block for cooling. This rating is standard for many raw-water cooled marine engines to prevent salt crystallization and ensure efficient operation.
What's the difference between OEM and aftermarket parts?
This listing is for an aftermarket replacement, not an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) part. It has been engineered to meet or exceed OEM-level specifications using comparable materials. All our parts are manufactured in an ISO 9002 certified facility and are batch-inspected for quality and consistency.
How fast is shipping?
We ship worldwide, with most orders arriving within 5–15 days via standard delivery. Standard shipping is free to most regions, and expedited options are available at checkout where applicable.
What is the warranty and return policy?
Our parts are covered by a 1-year warranty against manufacturing defects under normal use conditions. If you encounter an issue, please contact our support team with your order details. Returns are accepted within our standard window for items that are unused and in their original condition. See our full policy page or contact us for instructions.
Safety & Important Info
- Verify images and specifications against your original part before ordering. If anything differs—even if your model appears on the compatibility list—do not purchase.
- This is an aftermarket replacement component, not an OEM part.
- Professional installation is highly recommended for safety, performance, and to prevent engine damage.
