- Disconnect the battery and shift linkage. Place the outboard in neutral.
- Locate and unbolt the lower unit (gearcase) from the engine's upper section.
- Carefully lower the gearcase to access the water pump housing, which is typically located on top of the unit.
- Remove the bolts securing the water pump housing cover.
- Lift the cover and note the orientation of the old impeller. Remove the old impeller and the woodruff key from the driveshaft.
- Clean any debris or corrosion from the housing, base plate, and cover. Inspect for wear or damage.
- Install the new woodruff key and lubricate the new impeller and inside of the housing with a marine-safe grease.
- Install the new impeller by aligning it with the keyway and turning the driveshaft clockwise to seat the vanes correctly.
- Reinstall the water pump housing and torque its bolts to the manufacturer's specification.
- Reattach the lower unit to the engine, ensuring the driveshaft, shift shaft, and water tube align correctly.
