What’s in the Box

  • 1 x Propeller Wrench (91-859046Q4)

Installation Notes

  1. For safety, disconnect the battery and shift the outboard/sterndrive into neutral gear.
  2. Remove the propeller's cotter pin and/or straighten the locking tab washer away from the nut.
  3. Place the wrench over the propeller nut, ensuring a secure fit.
  4. Turn the wrench counter-clockwise to loosen and remove the nut. A block of wood between the anti-cavitation plate and a propeller blade can help prevent rotation.
  5. To install, clean and grease the propeller shaft, slide the propeller on, and hand-tighten the nut.
  6. Use the wrench to tighten the nut to the manufacturer's specified torque. Do not overtighten.
  7. Bend one of the tabs of the lock washer into the groove on the thrust washer or install a new cotter pin.

Troubleshooting & FAQ

Will this wrench fit my specific engine model?

This wrench is designed for a 1-1/16" (27mm) propeller nut, which is common on many outboards and sterndrives from brands like Mercury, Yamaha, Evinrude/Johnson, and more. Please consult our compatibility table and verify your prop nut size before ordering.

How do I use the built-in tab washer pin?

The small metal pin on the end of the wrench handle is designed to help you bend the locking tab on a tab washer. Use it as a lever to bend a tab flat to remove the prop nut, and to bend a new tab into place after tightening.

Is this wrench strong enough for seized propeller nuts?

The wrench is made from high-strength, fiber-reinforced plastic suitable for standard installation and removal. For heavily corroded or seized nuts, we recommend using a breaker bar and socket after applying penetrating oil to avoid damaging the tool or the propeller shaft.

Why is a floating wrench important?

Working over the water increases the risk of dropping tools. A floating wrench can be easily retrieved, saving you from losing a critical tool during maintenance. The high-visibility yellow color makes it easy to spot in the water.

Can this replace the black metal Mercury wrench (91-821887A1)?

Yes, this floating yellow wrench serves the same function and fits the same applications as the older black metal wrenches, including part number 91-821887A1. It offers the added benefits of being rustproof and buoyant.

OEM vs. Aftermarket?

This listing is an aftermarket replacement (not OEM). Built to OEM-level specifications with comparable materials. Manufactured in an ISO 9002 facility, batch-inspected for consistency.
