Installation Notes

  1. Disconnect the battery and spark plug leads for safety.
  2. Place the outboard in neutral gear and remove the lower unit (gearcase) bolts.
  3. Carefully lower the gearcase to access the water pump housing.
  4. Remove the water pump housing bolts and lift the housing to expose the impeller.
  5. Note the rotational direction of the old impeller vanes before removing it.
  6. Remove the old impeller, key, and gaskets. Clean all mating surfaces thoroughly.
  7. Install the new key in the driveshaft keyway.
  8. Slide the new impeller onto the driveshaft, rotating it in the direction of engine operation to bend the vanes correctly.
  9. Reinstall the water pump housing with new gaskets and tighten bolts to the manufacturer's specified torque.
  10. Reattach the lower unit to the outboard, ensuring the driveshaft and shift shaft align properly.
  11. Once assembled, test the engine using a water source (flushing muffs or in water) to confirm a strong, steady stream from the tell-tale outlet.

Troubleshooting & FAQ

How do I know if this impeller will fit my engine?

First, check the Engine & Model Compatibility table on this page. Second, cross-reference your existing part number with those in our Part Number Matrix. If you are still unsure, especially with Mercury/Mariner models, we recommend visually comparing your old impeller with our product images and dimensions before purchasing.

What are the signs of a failing water pump impeller?

Common symptoms include a weak or intermittent water stream from the "tell-tale" outlet, the engine overheating alarm sounding, or visible steam from the exhaust. Brittle, cracked, or missing vanes on the old impeller are clear indicators it needs replacement.

How often should I replace my outboard's impeller?

As a preventative maintenance measure, it is recommended to replace the impeller every 1-2 years or every 100-200 hours of operation, whichever comes first. For engines used in saltwater or sandy/silty conditions, annual replacement is strongly advised.

Why did my new impeller get damaged soon after installation?

Premature failure is often caused by running the engine dry, even for a few seconds, which can burn the neoprene vanes. It can also result from debris in the cooling system or incorrect installation (e.g., vanes pointing the wrong direction).

Is this part identical to the original OEM version?

This is an aftermarket part designed to meet or exceed OEM specifications for fit, form, and function. It is made from high-quality neoprene, just like many original parts, to ensure reliable performance.

Does this impeller fit newer Yamaha 4-Stroke models (post-2000)?

No, this specific impeller is only listed for Yamaha F9.9 and F15 4-stroke models manufactured up to the year 2000. Newer models may use a different part number.

OEM vs. Aftermarket?

This listing is an aftermarket replacement (not OEM). Built to OEM-level specifications with comparable materials. Manufactured in an ISO 9002 facility, batch-inspected for consistency.
