- Drain the engine coolant/raw water from the system to a level below the thermostat housing.
- Locate and remove the thermostat housing. Note the orientation of hoses before disconnecting.
- Remove the old thermostat, sleeve, and gaskets. Take note of the thermostat's orientation.
- Thoroughly clean the mating surfaces of the housing and engine block, removing any old gasket material or sealant.
- Install the new plastic sleeve and thermostat in the correct orientation.
- Place the new gaskets on the housing, applying a marine-grade sealant if recommended by the engine manufacturer.
- Reinstall the thermostat housing and tighten the bolts to the manufacturer's specified torque.
- Reconnect hoses and refill the cooling system.
- Reconnect the battery, start the engine, and check for leaks. Monitor the temperature gauge to ensure it warms up to and holds the correct temperature.
Troubleshooting & FAQ
How do I know if this thermostat kit will fit my engine?
The best way to confirm fitment is to check your engine model, year, and serial number against our compatibility table. Cross-referencing your old part number with the numbers in our Part Number Matrix is also a reliable method.
What are the signs of a faulty thermostat?
Common symptoms include the engine overheating (running above its normal temperature range) or running too cold (not reaching operating temperature). An erratic temperature gauge or visible coolant leaks around the housing can also indicate a problem.
When should I replace my engine's thermostat?
Thermostats should be replaced as part of regular preventative maintenance every 3-5 years, especially in saltwater environments. They should also be replaced immediately if you notice any signs of failure.
Why is a 160°F thermostat used in marine engines?
A 160°F thermostat is standard for raw-water cooled marine engines because it allows the engine to reach a temperature high enough for efficient combustion but low enough to prevent salt and mineral buildup, which can occur at higher temperatures.
What is the function of the plastic sleeve?
The plastic sleeve helps to properly position the thermostat within the housing and ensures that water flows correctly through the thermostat assembly for accurate temperature regulation.
OEM vs. Aftermarket?
This listing is an aftermarket replacement (not OEM). Built to OEM-level specifications with comparable materials. Manufactured in an ISO 9002 facility, batch-inspected for consistency.
