- Remove the bolts securing the lower unit (gearcase) to the upper driveshaft housing.
- Carefully lower the gearcase to expose the water pump assembly, which is located on top of the gearcase.
- Unbolt and remove the old water pump housing and its components, including the impeller, wear plate, and gaskets. Note their orientation.
- Thoroughly clean all mating surfaces on the gearcase, removing any old gasket material or sealant.
- Install the new gasket, wear plate, and insert cup from the kit.
- Slide the new impeller onto the driveshaft, aligning the keyway, and install the new impeller key.
- Place the new housing over the impeller, ensuring the new O-rings and seals are properly seated. Tighten the bolts to the manufacturer's specified torque.
- Re-attach the lower unit to the upper housing and refill the gearcase with fresh lubricant.
- Reconnect the battery and test the engine in a suitable water source, confirming water is exiting the tell-tale port.
Troubleshooting & FAQ
How do I know if this water pump kit fits my specific engine model?
The surest way is to match your existing OEM part number to one of the numbers listed in our Part Number Matrix. Additionally, check your engine horsepower and year against our compatibility table. If you are still unsure, please contact us with your engine's model and serial number.
What are the signs of a failing water pump?
Common signs include the engine overheating at idle or low speeds, a weak or non-existent water stream from the "tell-tale" outlet, or an audible grinding noise from the lower unit. Cracked or brittle impeller fins found during an inspection are also a clear indicator for replacement.
How often should a water pump impeller be replaced?
As a general maintenance rule, it is recommended to inspect and likely replace the water pump impeller every 1-2 years or every 100-200 hours of operation, whichever comes first. This interval can be shorter if you frequently operate in sandy, silty, or saltwater environments.
Is the included housing necessary to install?
Yes, this is a complete kit that includes the housing. It is highly recommended to replace the housing, wear plate, and insert cup along with the impeller, as these components wear over time and can cause premature failure of a new impeller if not replaced.
Why does my new installation have a weak water stream?
First, ensure the impeller key was correctly installed, as a missing key will prevent the impeller from spinning. Second, check for any blockages in the cooling water intake passages or the tell-tale outlet tube. Finally, confirm all gaskets and seals were seated properly to prevent pressure loss.
Can I buy just the impeller without the full kit?
This product is sold as a complete repair kit to ensure a reliable and long-lasting repair. We do not currently offer individual components from this kit for separate purchase. Replacing all related parts simultaneously prevents premature wear and ensures proper sealing.
OEM vs. Aftermarket?
This listing is an aftermarket replacement (not OEM). It is built to OEM-level specifications with comparable materials. The kit is manufactured in an ISO 9002 facility and batch-inspected for consistency and quality.
