Installation Notes

  1. Disconnect the vessel's battery and ensure the engine is cool.
  2. Drain the engine oil completely into a suitable container.
  3. Access the engine's oil pan and remove it to expose the crankshaft and connecting rods.
  4. Identify the connecting rod requiring the new bearing. Rotate the crankshaft for access if needed.
  5. Carefully unbolt and remove the connecting rod cap. Note the orientation of the cap and bearing shells.
  6. Remove the old bearing shells from the rod and cap.
  7. Thoroughly clean the rod, cap, and crankshaft journal surfaces. Inspect for any scoring or damage.
  8. Apply a generous amount of high-quality engine assembly lube to the new bearing shells.
  9. Install the new bearing shells into the rod and cap, ensuring they are seated correctly.
  10. Reinstall the connecting rod cap in its original orientation and torque the bolts to the manufacturer's specifications using a calibrated torque wrench.
  11. Reinstall the oil pan with a new gasket, refill with fresh engine oil, and reconnect the battery.
  12. Before starting, prime the engine's oil system if possible. Start the engine and check for proper oil pressure and any unusual noises.

Troubleshooting & FAQ

How do I know this is the correct bearing size for my engine?

This is a "Mark 6" size bearing. Yanmar engines often use several bearing sizes (e.g., Mark 2-6) to accommodate slight variances in manufacturing tolerances. It is critical to check your engine's service manual or the marking on your old bearing to confirm you are ordering the correct size. Using the wrong size can lead to catastrophic engine failure.

What are the symptoms of a failing connecting rod bearing?

The most common sign is a rhythmic knocking or tapping sound from the engine, often called "rod knock," which may change with engine RPM. Other symptoms include low oil pressure readings, a lit oil pressure warning light, and the presence of metallic shavings or glitter in the engine oil and filter.

Can I replace just one connecting rod bearing?

While it is technically possible to replace a single bearing, it is highly recommended to inspect all connecting rod bearings and consider replacing them as a complete set. This ensures even wear, proper engine balance, and helps prevent future failures. Always follow the guidelines in your engine’s official service manual.

Is any special preparation needed before installation?

Yes. Cleanliness is critical. Ensure the crankshaft journal and connecting rod surfaces are immaculately clean and free of old oil or debris. Applying a quality engine assembly lube to the bearing surfaces before installation is mandatory to prevent a dry start and immediate damage.

OEM vs. Aftermarket?

This listing is an aftermarket replacement (not OEM). Built to OEM-level specifications with comparable materials. Manufactured in an ISO 9002 facility, batch-inspected for consistency.
