Installation Notes

  1. Disconnect the boat's battery to prevent electrical shorts.
  2. Access the rear of the instrument panel or console where the switch will be mounted.
  3. If replacing an old switch, disconnect its wires and remove it. If making a new installation, drill a hole of the appropriate diameter for the switch body.
  4. Feed the new switch's wires through the hole and mount the switch body, securing it with its retaining nut.
  5. Connect the two wires to the engine's ignition circuit. These typically connect in series with the ignition's "off" or "kill" circuit. Consult your engine's service manual for the exact wiring diagram.
  6. Reconnect the battery and test the switch. The engine should only start when the lanyard clip is in place and should stop immediately when the clip is pulled.

Troubleshooting & FAQ

How do I know if my stop switch has failed?

Common signs of a faulty stop switch include the engine not starting even with the lanyard clip attached, or the engine failing to shut off when the clip is pulled. Intermittent stalling can also be a symptom of a failing switch with a loose internal connection.

Is this a "normally open" or "normally closed" switch?

This is a "normally open" (NO) switch. When the lanyard clip is attached, it closes the circuit, allowing the ignition system to function. When the clip is removed, the circuit opens, which cuts power to the ignition and stops the engine.

Can I bypass the stop switch to start my engine?

While it is often possible to bypass a faulty stop switch in an emergency by disconnecting its leads and joining them (for NO circuits), this is not recommended for regular operation. The stop switch is a critical safety feature that should always be functional.

What is the difference between this and the OEM Yamaha part?

This is an aftermarket part designed to meet or exceed OEM specifications for fit, form, and function. The materials and electrical components are of comparable quality, but it is not manufactured by Yamaha.

How often should a kill switch lanyard be replaced?

The lanyard itself should be inspected regularly for UV damage, fraying, or a weak clip. We recommend replacing it every few seasons or immediately if it shows any signs of wear to ensure it functions correctly in an emergency.

Will this fit my specific Yamaha outboard model?

This switch replaces OEM part 69W-82575-00 and fits many Yamaha models. However, the best way to ensure compatibility is to compare the part number stamped on your original switch to the numbers in our Part Number Matrix.

OEM vs. Aftermarket?

This listing is an aftermarket replacement (not OEM). Built to OEM-level specifications with comparable materials. Manufactured in an ISO 9002 facility, batch-inspected for consistency.
