  8. Reattach the lower unit to the upper casing, torquing bolts to the manufacturer's specification.
  9. Refill the gearcase with the correct type and amount of new gear lube through the lower drain/fill screw until it emerges from the upper vent screw.
  10. Reinstall drain and vent screws with new gaskets, and then reinstall the propeller.

Troubleshooting & FAQ

How do I confirm this kit fits my Yamaha engine?

Check your engine's model number and year against the compatibility table provided. For example, this kit fits models like F50A, T50TLR, and F40B within the 2001–2007 year range. If your model is listed, the kit is a confirmed fit. Always verify your OEM part number if possible.

What are the signs of a failing lower unit seal?

The most common sign is "milky" or creamy-looking gear lube, which indicates water intrusion. You may also notice gear oil leaking from the propeller shaft area or around the lower unit case seams. A metallic sheen in the oil can also indicate internal wear caused by water contamination.

How often should I replace my lower unit seals?

There is no fixed replacement interval. It is best practice to replace the seals whenever the lower unit is removed for other service (e.g., water pump impeller replacement). You should also replace them immediately if you detect any signs of leakage or water intrusion.

What makes the part numbers 62Y-W0001-22-00, -21-00, and -20-00 different?

These numbers represent a supersession chain from Yamaha. The -20-00 was the original part number, which was later updated to -21-00, and finally to the current -22-00. They are all functionally identical and interchangeable. This kit replaces all three versions.

Is any special sealant required for installation?

While the gaskets and seals are designed to create a tight seal, some mechanics apply a thin layer of a non-hardening sealant like Yamabond 4, Permatex Aviation Form-A-Gasket, or Loctite 518 to the surfaces of the metal gaskets as an extra precaution against leaks. This is not always required but is considered good practice.

OEM vs. Aftermarket?

This listing is an aftermarket replacement (not OEM). Built to OEM-level specifications with comparable materials. Manufactured in an ISO 9002 facility, batch-inspected for consistency.
