This Impeller Repair Kit – Fits Sherwood, Crusader, Oberdorfer Raw Water Pumps (Replaces Sherwood 10615K-SHW) is a direct replacement for the Sherwood 10615K-SHW impeller. Installation Notes

  1. Ensure the engine is off and cool. Close the water intake seacock.
  2. Place absorbent pads under the pump to catch any spillage.
  3. Remove the screws from the raw water pump cover plate.
  4. Carefully pry off the cover. Note the orientation of the old impeller blades.
  5. Remove the old impeller using impeller pullers or two screwdrivers as levers. Avoid gouging the pump housing.
  6. Clean the inside of the pump housing and the cover plate, removing any old gasket material or debris.
  7. Lightly lubricate the new impeller and the inside of the pump housing with a suitable marine lubricant (glycerin or soap).
  8. Insert the new impeller with a rotating motion, ensuring the blades are bent in the same direction as the old one.
  9. Install the new O-ring or gasket on the cover plate.
  10. Re-install the cover plate and tighten the screws evenly in a star pattern.
  11. Open the water intake seacock.
  12. Start the engine and immediately check for leaks and proper water flow from the exhaust.

Troubleshooting & FAQ

How do I know if my impeller needs replacing?

Signs of a failing impeller include reduced water flow from the exhaust, engine temperatures rising above normal, visible cracks or missing blades on the impeller, and a brittle or stiff feel to the rubber. Regular inspection (at least annually) is recommended.

What causes an impeller to fail prematurely?

The most common cause is running the pump dry, which quickly overheats and destroys the neoprene blades. Other causes include ingestion of debris, chemical exposure (oil, fuel), and normal wear and tear over time.

Can I reuse the gaskets or O-ring?

No. This kit includes a new set of gaskets and an O-ring. Always use new seals during an impeller replacement to ensure a leak-free seal and prevent pump cavitation or damage.

The new impeller seems larger than the pump housing. Is this normal?

Yes, impellers are designed to fit tightly into the housing. The blades are flexible and will compress upon insertion. This tight fit is necessary to create the pumping action. Be sure to lubricate it before installation.

Why so many gaskets?

This kit is designed to fit a wide variety of pump models from different manufacturers (Sherwood, Oberdorfer, etc.). These pumps have slightly different gasket patterns. Match the correct new gasket to your specific pump model and discard the others.

What is the difference between Neoprene and Nitrile impellers?

Neoprene (used in this impeller) is excellent for raw water cooling pumps where some sand or silt may be present. Nitrile impellers are typically used for oil or diesel fuel transfer pumps as they are more resistant to petroleum products.
