Installation Notes

Professional installation is recommended. The following are general, non-model-specific guidelines:

  1. Ensure the engine is off and cool. Disconnect the battery and spark plug leads for safety.
  2. Access the lower crankshaft area where the seal is located, which may require removing the lower unit or other components.
  3. Carefully pry out the old oil seal using a seal puller or flat-head screwdriver, being cautious not to score or damage the housing or crankshaft surfaces.
  4. Thoroughly clean the seal bore and the crankshaft surface, removing any old sealant, corrosion, or debris.
  5. Lightly lubricate the inner and outer surfaces of the new seal with marine grease to facilitate a smooth installation.
  6. Position the new seal squarely over the bore with the garter spring facing the oil side (inward).
  7. Gently and evenly press the new seal into place using a seal driver or a socket with an outer diameter matching the seal's. Do not hammer directly on the seal.
  8. Reassemble all components in the reverse order of removal, torquing fasteners to manufacturer specifications.

Troubleshooting & FAQ

How do I confirm this seal fits my Suzuki engine?

Because specific model compatibility data is limited, the best way to ensure fitment is to check your engine's service manual or parts diagram for part number 09283-17002 or 09283-17034. Additionally, measure your old seal; it should match the dimensions of 17mm inner diameter, 40mm outer diameter, and 7mm width.

What are the signs of a failing crankshaft oil seal?

Symptoms of a bad lower crankshaft seal include visible oil leaking from the bottom of the engine cowling, a noticeable drop in gearcase lube level, or water intrusion causing milky, contaminated gear oil.

What does the "TC" or double-lip design do?

A TC oil seal has two lips. The main inner lip, supported by the garter spring, contains the oil. The secondary outer lip (or dust lip) prevents external contaminants like water, salt, and dirt from entering, which is critical for protecting the engine in a marine environment.

Can I reuse my old oil seal after an inspection?

No. Oil seals are single-use components. They should always be replaced whenever they are removed during service to ensure a proper, leak-free fit. Attempting to reuse an old seal will likely result in leaks.
