How do I know if my propeller shaft oil seal is failing?
The most common signs of a bad seal are visible gear oil leaking from around the propeller shaft area, or discovering milky, water-contaminated oil when you perform a lower unit oil change. You might also notice a burning smell from the gearcase due to lubrication failure.
Why are two seals required for the service?
Most Yamaha gearcases use two seals on the propeller shaft, installed back-to-back. One seal keeps the gear oil in, and the other prevents water from getting in. For a durable, long-lasting repair, it is critical to replace both seals simultaneously. This product is sold individually.
