Installation Notes

  1. Disconnect the battery and spark plug wires for safety. Drain engine oil and coolant.
  2. Remove the cylinder head and any components obstructing access to the pistons.
  3. Carefully remove the old piston, connecting rod, and associated clips and bearings.
  4. Thoroughly clean the cylinder walls, crankshaft, and connecting rod. Inspect for any damage.
  5. Ensure the cylinder is correctly bored and honed to match the .030" oversize piston.
  6. Install the new piston rings onto the new piston, ensuring correct orientation.
  7. Lubricate the new piston, rings, wrist pin, and cylinder wall with fresh 2-stroke engine oil.
  8. Install the new piston onto the connecting rod with the new wrist pin and secure it with the new clips.
  9. Carefully guide the piston and ring assembly into the cylinder using a ring compressor tool.
  10. Reassemble the engine components in reverse order, torquing all bolts to manufacturer specifications.
  11. Refill engine fluids, reconnect the battery and spark plugs, and perform a break-in procedure as recommended by your engine's service manual.

Troubleshooting & FAQ

How do I know if I need an oversize piston?

An oversize piston is required when the cylinder wall has been worn or damaged and must be machined (bored) to a larger diameter. This should only be determined after a qualified marine mechanic measures the cylinder bore for wear, taper, and out-of-round conditions.

Is this kit for one or two cylinders?

This kit contains components for one cylinder. If you are rebuilding a 2-cylinder engine, you will need to purchase two kits.

What are the signs of a failing piston?

Common symptoms include low compression in one or more cylinders, excessive smoke from the exhaust, a knocking or rattling sound from the engine (piston slap), and a noticeable loss of power.

Do I need a special tool to install the piston rings?

Yes, it is highly recommended to use a piston ring expander tool to install the rings onto the piston and a piston ring compressor tool to guide the piston assembly into the cylinder. Using incorrect tools can easily break the new rings or damage the piston.

Is honing the cylinder necessary before installing?

Absolutely. After boring the cylinder to the .030" oversize dimension, it must be honed to create the proper cross-hatch pattern on the cylinder wall. This pattern is critical for seating the new rings and ensuring proper lubrication.

What is the break-in procedure for a new piston?

Follow the specific break-in procedure outlined in your outboard's official service manual. Generally, it involves running the engine at varying, low-to-mid RPMs for several hours without sustained full-throttle operation to allow the new rings to seat correctly against the cylinder wall.

OEM vs. Aftermarket?

This listing is an aftermarket replacement (not OEM). Built to OEM-level specifications with comparable materials. Manufactured in an ISO 9002 facility, batch-inspected for consistency.

Shipping speed & cost?

We ship worldwide quickly—typical transit 5–15 days. Standard shipping is free; expedited options appear at checkout where available.

Warranty & returns?

Covered by a 1-year warranty against manufacturing defects under normal use. If issues arise, contact support with your order details. Returns are accepted within our standard window (unused & in original condition). See our policy page or reach out for instructions.
