Installation Notes

  1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal and ensure the engine is completely cool.
  2. Gain access to the rear of the engine, which typically requires removing the outdrive, bell housing, and flywheel.
  3. Carefully unbolt and remove the rear main seal retainer housing. Note the bolt positions if they vary in length.
  4. Remove the old gasket, ensuring both the engine block and retainer housing surfaces are perfectly clean and free of any old gasket material, oil, or sealant.
  5. Position the new gasket onto the clean retainer housing. Do not use sealant unless explicitly required by your engine's service manual.
  6. Reinstall the retainer housing, tightening bolts to the manufacturer's specified torque in the correct sequence to ensure even pressure.
  7. Reassemble the flywheel, bell housing, outdrive, and any other components that were removed.
  8. Reconnect the battery, start the engine, and carefully inspect for any oil leaks around the bell housing area before returning to service.

Troubleshooting & FAQ

How do I know if this gasket fits my engine?

This gasket is designed for specific Mercruiser, Volvo Penta, and OMC V6/V8 models from 1994–1998. Please check the compatibility tables and cross-reference your engine's serial number (for Mercruiser) or model year to confirm fitment. Always compare the product images to your old part before ordering.

What are the signs of a failing rear main seal retainer gasket?

Common symptoms include an oil leak from the area where the engine meets the transmission (the bell housing), a noticeable drop in oil level, or oil spots under the boat. A visual inspection may reveal fresh oil residue and grime around the retainer housing.

Do I need to use sealant with this gasket?

Generally, this type of composite gasket is designed to be installed dry. However, always consult your engine's specific service manual. Some applications may recommend a very thin bead of sealant at the corners or sharp bends, but over-application can cause the gasket to slip and fail.

Is this the same as a rear main seal?

No. This is the gasket that seals the metal housing (retainer) that holds the rear main seal. The rear main seal itself is a separate circular seal that fits inside this housing. If you are replacing the seal, it is critical to also replace this gasket.

My engine model isn't listed, but the part number matches. Can I use it?

If your existing part has a number that cross-references to 27-14241, 27-881715, or 3852656, it is likely compatible. However, we strongly recommend using it only for the engine models explicitly listed in our compatibility chart to guarantee proper sealing and performance.

OEM vs. Aftermarket?

This listing is an aftermarket replacement (not OEM). Built to OEM-level specifications with comparable materials. Manufactured in an ISO 9002 facility, batch-inspected for consistency.
