Installation Notes

  1. Disconnect the spark plug wires and shift the outboard into neutral.
  2. Remove the bolts securing the lower unit (gearcase) to the upper leg and carefully lower it.
  3. Unbolt and remove the water pump housing cover to expose the old impeller. Note the orientation of the fins.
  4. Slide the old impeller off the driveshaft, removing the drive key if present.
  5. Clean the housing and wear plate, inspecting for scoring or damage. Replace if necessary.
  6. Lightly lubricate the new impeller and housing interior with marine grease or soapy water.
  7. Install the drive key, then slide the new impeller onto the shaft while turning it in the direction of engine rotation to bend the blades correctly.
  8. Reinstall the housing cover, apply sealant to the bolts if required, and tighten to the manufacturer's specified torque.
  9. Reinstall the lower unit, ensuring the driveshaft, shift shaft, and water tube are correctly aligned. Test the engine with a water supply.

Troubleshooting & FAQ

How do I know if my water pump impeller is failing?

Common signs of a worn or damaged impeller include a weak or non-existent "telltale" water stream, engine overheating alarms, and reduced engine performance. A visual inspection may also reveal cracked, brittle, or missing blades.

How often should this impeller be replaced?

For preventative maintenance, it is recommended to inspect and/or replace the water pump impeller every 1-2 years or every 100-200 hours of operation, especially if used frequently in saltwater or sandy/silty conditions.

Will this impeller fit my 30 HP Johnson engine from 1985?

Yes, according to the compatibility chart, this impeller fits Johnson 30 HP 2-stroke models from 1980 to 2005. Always cross-reference your engine's model and year with the compatibility table to ensure a perfect fit.

Is any special lubrication required during installation?

Yes, applying a light coat of marine grease or a water/soap solution to the inside of the pump housing and the impeller blades will help ease installation and provide initial lubrication upon startup, preventing damage to the new impeller.

Can I reuse my old water pump housing and wear plate?

You can reuse the housing and plate if they are in good condition. Inspect them for any scoring, deep grooves, or heat-related warping. If significant wear is present, it's best to replace them to ensure proper pump performance and longevity of the new impeller.

What is the difference between a wedge key and a pin drive impeller?

This is a wedge type (or "D" shaft) impeller, which slides onto a driveshaft with a flat side for alignment. Other types might use a separate pin or key that fits into a slot. Ensure you are matching the drive type of your specific engine; this model is not for pin-drive systems.

OEM vs. Aftermarket?

This listing is an aftermarket replacement (not OEM). Built to OEM-level specifications with comparable materials. Manufactured in an ISO 9002 facility, batch-inspected for consistency.

Shipping speed & cost?

We ship worldwide quickly—typical transit 5–15 days. Standard shipping is free; expedited options appear at checkout where available.

Warranty & returns?

Covered by a 1-year warranty against manufacturing defects under normal use. If issues arise, contact support with your order details. Returns are accepted within our standard window (unused & in original condition). See our policy page or reach out for instructions.
