Installation Notes
- Disconnect the battery and drain the gearcase oil.
- Unbolt and carefully lower the gearcase (lower unit) from the outboard's midsection.
- Locate the water pump on top of the gearcase and remove the housing bolts.
- Lift the housing and remove the old impeller, taking note of the vane direction.
- Clean and inspect the pump housing, wear plate, and cup. Replace if excessively scored or warped.
- Install the new gasket and impeller seal.
- Slide the new impeller onto the driveshaft, using the correct key. Rotate the driveshaft clockwise while pushing down to correctly bend the vanes.
- Apply a light coat of marine grease or soapy water to the inside of the housing and reinstall it.
- Torque the housing bolts to the manufacturer's specified value.
- Reinstall the lower unit, ensuring the driveshaft, shift shaft, and water tube are properly aligned.
- Refill the gearcase with the correct type and amount of new lubricant.
- Reconnect the battery. Start the engine in water and verify a strong, consistent stream from the tell-tale port.
Troubleshooting & FAQ
How do I know if this impeller fits my specific engine model?
Check the compatibility table on this page. It lists the supported HP, stroke, and year ranges for Johnson/Evinrude outboards. Always verify your OEM part number against the ones listed in the Part Number Matrix to ensure a perfect match.
What are the signs of a failing water pump impeller?
Common signs include a weak or no water stream from the engine's tell-tale outlet, engine overheating alarms on the console, a "hot" smell, or steam coming from the exhaust when running.
How often should I replace my impeller?
For preventative maintenance, it is recommended to inspect the impeller annually and replace it every 1–2 years or 100–200 hours of use, whichever comes first. Service intervals should be shorter for boats used in saltwater or in water with heavy sediment.
What is the difference between the included white and black keys?
Johnson/Evinrude used different driveshaft key styles over the decades. The inclusion of both common types (white and black) ensures you will have the correct key for your specific model without needing a separate purchase.
My engine still overheats after replacing the impeller. What else could be wrong?
If overheating persists, check for other issues such as a clogged water intake screen, a worn-out water pump housing or wear plate, a stuck or faulty thermostat, or blockages within the engine's internal cooling passages.
OEM vs. Aftermarket?
This listing is an aftermarket replacement (not OEM). Built to OEM-level specifications with comparable materials. Manufactured in an ISO 9002 facility, batch-inspected for consistency.
