Installation Notes

  1. Disconnect the spark plug leads and turn off the fuel supply for safety.
  2. Place a drain pan under the lower unit and remove the gearcase oil drain screw to empty the oil.
  3. Remove the bolts that secure the lower unit (gearcase) to the engine's upper casing.
  4. Carefully separate and lower the gearcase assembly to expose the water pump housing.
  5. Unscrew the bolts on the water pump housing and remove the cover and any gaskets.
  6. Slide the old impeller off the driveshaft. You may need to gently pry it off. Note the orientation of the vanes.
  7. Thoroughly clean any old gasket material, sediment, or debris from the housing, wear plate, and cover.
  8. Apply a light coat of marine-grade silicone grease, glycerine, or simple dish soap to the inside of the pump housing and to the new impeller.
  9. Align the keyway and slide the new impeller onto the driveshaft. Turn the driveshaft clockwise to help bend the vanes into the correct orientation inside the housing.
  10. Reinstall the water pump cover, using new gaskets if included, and tighten the bolts to the manufacturer's specified torque.
  11. Carefully guide the driveshaft and water tube back into position as you reattach the lower unit to the engine. Secure all bolts.
  12. Refill the gearcase with the correct type and amount of marine gear lube before starting the engine.

Troubleshooting & FAQ

How do I confirm this impeller fits my outboard engine?

The most reliable method is to check your engine's model, year, and serial number against the Engine & Model Compatibility table on this page. For Mariner models, serial number verification is critical. If in doubt, compare the technical specifications and images to your old part before ordering.

What are the signs of a failing water pump impeller?

Common symptoms include the engine running hotter than normal, an intermittent or weak water stream from the "tell-tale" outlet, and visible cracking or brittleness on the old impeller's rubber vanes upon inspection.

How often should I replace my impeller?

For preventative maintenance, it is recommended to replace the water pump impeller every 1-2 years or every 100-200 hours of operation, depending on usage conditions (e.g., saltwater vs. freshwater).

Is special lubrication required for installation?

Yes. To prevent damage to the impeller during first startup, you must lubricate the interior of the pump housing and the new impeller with silicone grease, glycerine, or dish soap. Do not install it dry.

What is the difference between this aftermarket part and an OEM one?

This part is manufactured to meet or exceed OEM specifications for fit, form, and function, using comparable high-quality materials like neoprene rubber and a hardened nylon hub. It offers a cost-effective alternative to the original manufacturer's part without sacrificing performance or durability.

OEM vs. Aftermarket?

This listing is an aftermarket replacement (not OEM). Built to OEM-level specifications with comparable materials. Manufactured in an ISO 9002 facility, batch-inspected for consistency.
