- Slide the old impeller off the driveshaft, noting the orientation of the fins. Remove the impeller key.
- Clean the housing interior and face plate. Replace the face plate and gaskets from the kit.
- Install the new impeller key and slide the new impeller onto the driveshaft, rotating the shaft clockwise to bend the fins correctly.
- Install the new seals and O-rings on the housing cover.
- Reinstall the water pump housing, ensuring a proper seal. Tighten bolts to the manufacturer’s torque specification.
- Reattach the lower unit to the engine, ensuring the driveshaft, shift shaft, and water tube are correctly aligned.
- Refill the gearcase with fresh lubricant before starting the engine.
- Safely start the engine using a water supply (flushing muffs) and verify for a steady stream of water from the tell-tale port.
Troubleshooting & FAQ
How do I know if this impeller kit fits my engine?
The best way to ensure compatibility is to check your engine's model, year, and serial number against the Engine & Model Compatibility tables above. If your OEM part number matches one listed in our Part Number Matrix, it will fit.
What are the signs of a failing water pump impeller?
Common signs include a weak or intermittent water stream from the "tell-tale" outlet, engine overheating alarms, and in severe cases, steam from the exhaust. It's critical to address these symptoms immediately to prevent engine damage.
How often should I replace the water pump impeller?
As a rule of thumb, it is recommended to inspect the impeller annually and replace it every 1-2 years or every 100-200 hours of operation, depending on usage conditions. More frequent replacement may be necessary if you operate in sandy, silty, or saltwater environments.
My old pump housing is scored or melted. Can I still use this kit?
If the inside of the pump housing or the face plate has deep grooves, scoring, or signs of heat damage (warping/melting), you should replace the entire water pump assembly. Installing a new impeller in a damaged housing will lead to premature failure and poor performance.
What are some common installation mistakes to avoid?
The most common mistake is installing the impeller with the vanes bent in the wrong direction. Always rotate the driveshaft clockwise during installation to ensure the fins curve correctly. Also, be sure to use all new gaskets and seals provided and to properly align the water tube and shift shaft during reassembly.
Is this an OEM part or an aftermarket equivalent?
This listing is for an aftermarket replacement part, not an OEM component. It has been engineered to meet or exceed OEM-level specifications using comparable materials and manufactured in an ISO 9002 facility. Each batch is inspected for quality and consistency.
How fast do you ship and what are the costs?
We ship worldwide quickly, with typical transit times between 5 to 15 days. Standard shipping is free for most orders. Expedited shipping options and exact costs are displayed at checkout where available.
What is the warranty and return policy?
This product is covered by a 1-year limited warranty against manufacturing defects under normal marine use. If you encounter an issue, please contact our support team with your order details. Returns are accepted within our standard window for unused items in their original condition. See our policy page or reach out for instructions.
