- Align the new anode and insert the provided bolt.
- Tighten the bolt securely according to manufacturer torque specifications if available. Do not overtighten.
- Do not paint the anode, as this will insulate it and render it ineffective.
- Reconnect the battery once installation is complete.
Troubleshooting & FAQ
When should I replace this anode?
Anodes should be inspected during routine maintenance and replaced when they are 50-75% corroded. For most boaters, this means replacing them annually, especially if operating in aggressive saltwater environments.
What are the signs of a failing anode?
A completely corroded or missing anode is the most obvious sign. Other indicators include new or accelerated corrosion on nearby metal components of your sterndrive or outboard, such as the propeller, gearcase, or trim rams.
Can I use this zinc anode in freshwater?
It is not recommended. Zinc anodes can form a calcium carbonate coating in freshwater, which passivates them and stops them from providing protection. For freshwater use, a magnesium anode (like Sierra 18-6244) is the correct choice.
Why is a clean mounting surface so important?
The anode protects other metals by creating an electrical circuit. Any paint, corrosion, or grime on the mounting surface can insulate the anode, breaking this circuit and preventing it from sacrificing itself. The connection must be bare metal to bare metal.
OEM vs. Aftermarket?
This listing is an aftermarket replacement (not OEM). Built to OEM-level specifications with comparable materials. Manufactured in an ISO 9002 facility, batch-inspected for consistency.
